Description: Silver teaspoon with a pointed oval bowl and coffin-end handle, which is marked "I.MOULTON" in a rectangle for Joseph Moulton III (1744-1816), and engraved with the initials "SC" in script on the front of the handle. Son of silversmith William Moulton (1720-c.1793), Joseph Moulton III probably apprenticed with his father and possibly trained with his silversmith uncle Joseph Moulton II (1724-1795) in Newburyport. Stephen Decatur attributed three marks to Joseph Moulton II, two of which ("JM" in a rectangle, and "I. MOULTON" in a rectangle) and a third ("J M" with a cross between in a rectangle) Louise Belden suggests were shared by Joseph Moulton II and his nephew Joseph Moulton III.
