Description: Silver teaspoon a spatulate-end handle with a midrib and an eliptical bowl with a rounded drop and lobed shall on the back, which is marked "J.M" in a rectangle for Joseph Moulton II (1724-1795), and engraved with the initials "LE" in block letters on the back of the handle. Son of blacksmith Joseph Moulton (1694-1756), Joseph Moulton II was the younger brother of silversmith William Moulton (1720-c.1793), and was active in Newburyport for nearly 50 years. Stephen Decatur attributed three marks to Joseph Moulton II, two of which ("JM" in a rectangle, and "I. MOULTON" in a rectangle) and a third ("J M" with a cross between in a rectangle) Louise Belden suggests were shared by Joseph and his nephew, silversmith Joseph Moulton III (1744-1816).
