Description:
One of a pair of Chippendale carved mahogany side chairs, the design based on plate 9 of Robert Mainwaring's The Cabinet and Chairmaker's Real Friend and Companion, published in London in 1765. Winterthur has a chair of this pattern signed on the seat frame: "Bottum'd June 1773 by WVE Salem." The chair has a shaped crest with incised edge above a pierced volute-carved vase-form splat and upholstered seat, on acanthus-carved and punchwork decorated legs ending in claw-and-ball feet. Attributed to the shop of Nathaniel Gould (1734-1782).These came from a set of chairs from the Flynts' Greenwich house.

Label Text:
Exhibited: "Rococo: Celebrating 18th-Century Design and Decoration" (2018-2019): This chair's splat design is based on plate 9 of Robert Manwaring's The Cabinet and Chairmaker's Real Friend and Companion, on display next to it. The chair's shaped crest, pierced volute-carved vase-form splat, acanthus-carved and punchwork decorated legs, and claw-and-ball feet exemplify the Rococo style's incorporation of C and S-shapes in three-dimensional objects. Manwaring was a contemporary of Chippendale, and while less is known about his life and career, his pattern book was another important design source for artists and craftsmen of the period.
