Description: One of an assembled set of five English delft plates with blue decoration. The well has a chinoiserie garden scene with a Chinese figure holding a fan and seated under the arching, leafy branch of a bamboo tree, and a flying insect on the right side. The rim has three panels of trellis diaper decoration alternating with three shaped reserves of twin bamboo branches, each with three leaves. The Bristol attribution is based on the number of fragments with this design found at the Temple Back pottery site in Bristol. This pattern is most commonly found in blue, but is also known in purple with touches of other colors such as yellow (see HD 56.226 and HD 56.353.2). English delft plates with similar bamboo leaves are known dated 1739 and 1742.
