Description:
Booklet titled "The INSTITUTION of the SOCIETY of the CINCINNATI. / Formed by the OFFICERS of the ARMY of the UNITED STATES, for the laudable Purposes therein mentioned. / Published by Order and for the Use of the Members in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. / Boston: PRINTED BY MANNING & LORING. / 1801." The inside front cover has the ink entry: "Memo July 1st 1812. Funds / of the Society consists of / 3 percent --- $29612 00 / States Notes 5 pr cents 952.13 / 30564.13 / Yearly income $935.36." The flyleaf is signed, "David S. Townsend / Boston." David S. Townsend (1790-1853) was the son of Dr. David Townsend (1753-1829), the owner of the Society of Cincinnati teaset (HD 56.105) and diploma (HD 56.105A). After graduating Harvard in 1809, David S. Townsend served throughout the War of 1812, and afterward was appointed civilian Paymaster of the Army; he succeeded his father in the Society of the Cincinnati in 1830 where he later was a member of the Standing Committee of the Massachusetts Society, Assistant Treasurer, and Treasurer. The front and back covers are discolored blue/greem wove papers adhered to the end sheets covering the string bindings. It is made of nine single sheet signatures of medium weight laid paper, making 23 printed pages, which are bound with a simple two-hole string binding. The pages have offset printing ink with hand-applied iron gall ink inscriptions throughout the booklet. The front page has an engraving titled "Cincinnati" and "Design. Drawn by Geo. Graham." Pages 3-11 detail the founding principals of the Society done during the "CANTONMENT of the AMERICAN ARMY in HUDSON'S RIVER, May 10th, 1783," and pages 12-23 list the names of the original members in alphabetical order. There are handwritten entries for additional members for 1802, 1803, 1804, 1808, and 1809 on page 23.
