Description: Painted wooden advertising sign for "SHOES, STATIONARY and YANKEE NOTIONS," which may be from the Munn family of Deerfield. Like many storekeepers in the maturing economy of rural New England, Philo Munn (1813-1895) of Deerfield, who was trained as a shoemaker, combined wholesale and retail operations to offer what today seems like an odd combination of goods. However, the critical requirement for success was location, and Munn's store sat in the center of the village across from the Brick Church. While he benefited from local trade, those in search of a broad selection in the latest fashions were more likely to travel to Greenfield, the county seat 3 miles away.
