Map titled "UNITED STATES of AMERICA." over "London Pubd. as the Act Directs Feb. 26th 1797 by J. Wilkes" and "Neele sc. 352 Strand." in the lower right corner. The map by Samuel John Neele (1758-1824), a well-known London engraver of antiquarian maps and views who worked at 352 Strand, was originally printed in the "Encyclopaedia Londinensis" published in 1797 by John Wilkes; this map appears as if it was torn from a book or atlas. The hand-colored map depicts the eastern section of America from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, and from the Atlantic Ocean to Louisiana which is includes the entire area west of the Mississippi River. The "Tenassee Government" had just been created from North Carolina with "Knockville" in its east; North Carolina has "Charlottesburg;" Georgia extends to the Mississippi; and there are many Indian tribes and place names.
