Description:
Patent wall clock with laid paper dial marked, "WARRANTED / By / Curtis & Dunning / BURLINGTON, VT." The top of the clock is decorated with a removable gilt wood finial, and the clock's throat and pendulum box door are ornamented with reverse painted glass panels. The scene on the pendulum box door, titled "AURORA," depicts the Roman goddess of dawn riding a horse drawn chariot. The clock's lower portion features a gilt wood bracket with a drop finial. The partnership between clockmakers Lemuel Curtis and Joseph Dunning began in 1813 when they were working in Concord, Massachusetts. In 1821, Curtis and Dunning moved to Burlington, Vermont, where they continued making clocks until 1832. Possessing a laid paper dial, this clock represents a slightly less expensive version of Curtis & Dunning's patent time pieces.
