Description:
Six board blanket box on tall bracket feet with interior till. The front and side edges of the lid include applied rectangular strips of wood, and is secured to the box with two metal hinges. Although fancifully painted in blue, burgundy, and yellow, the decoration is meant to imitate veneered panels with large oval or circular-shaped central designs surrounded by highly figured maple cross-banded veneers. The box is noteworthy for the inscription on the bottom, “E. Harwood / Hartford,” suggesting its use as a traveling trunk. Nail holes along the front and side edges of the lid reveal that nails were once added to secure the box's contents, further suggesting the box's use as a traveling trunk.
