Description:
Oval sauce tureen with cover, John Rogers & Son (1815-1842) Longport, Staffordshire, England, c. 1815-1820. Lead-glazed pearlware transfer printed in underglaze cobalt blue. “Greek Statue” pattern. Tureen is molded in an elongated oval shape with molded lion mask handles at either end, there is a u-shaped cut out for a ladle, and a lion head finial on the cover. The pattern is transfer printed in underglaze cobalt blue and depicts two men standing in front of Greek ruins and a large statue. The border is composed of shells, leaves, and scrolls. A source print is titled "Ruins of Athens." Horace Collamore of Boston, MA, a china and glass merchant, was importing this blue printed pattern from John and George Rogers, in 1815, as detailed in his letterbook as "2 Hhds.[Hogsheads] Dining Ware Roman Statue" owned by Old Sturbridge Village.
