Description: Pictorial needlework depicting Queen Anne (1665-1714; r. 1702-1714). The bust-length portrait of the Queen is set within a roundel. Above her is a crown flanked by two trumpeting angels, which may suggest the piece was made closer to the time of her coronation. The crown, trumpets, elements of Queen Anne's dress, and a curtain tassel within the roundel, are all highlighted using metallic (flat, gilded metal wrapped around a yellow silk core) threads. The rest of the picture is filled with embroidered floral motifs, including lillies, carnations, roses, and acanthus leaves. Three other motifs are placed below the portrait: a reclining leopard by a tree; a swimming duck; and a squirrel by a tree. The piece was probably worked by a schoolgirl or amateur embroiderer, who may have copied print sources for many of the motifs as well as the Queen's portrait.
