Description:
Lathe trimmed, thrown jug; bulbous body with cove collar/neck; applied v-shaped spout and handle; decorated with overglaze black enamel and silver luster; painted with silver bands along the upper rim of the mug, the mid section and base of the neck, and just above the base of the mug; painted silver floral design just below the spout; painted silver sprays on the outside of the handle; painted silver circles on each side of the mug, within which are transfer printed designs; on one side is poem which reads, “THE BLACKSMITHS EPITAPH / My sledge and hammer lie reclin’d / My bellows too have lost their wind / My fire’s extinct my forge decay’d / And in the dust my vice is laid / My coal is spent my Iron’s gone / My nails are drove my work is done / My fire dry’d corpse lies here at rest / My soul smoke like is soaring to be / Bless’d” ; at the top of the poem are images of a blacksmith’s bellows and various hammers; at the bottom of the poem are images of a tool box, gravestone, vise, and anvil; on the reverse is a transfer printed scene of a country estate nestled among trees; in the foreground is a couple standing in front of a pond, in which swim two swans.
