Description: Cherry chest of drawers probably made by Benjamin Munn III (1738-1824), which appears to retain its original finish and cast brass hardware. Its drawers are crafted from thick white pine stock and terminate in protruding rear dovetails. The chest has two long horizontal doors under a central drawer with shell-carving surrounding a circular wood pull with two smaller drawers on each side. This scallop-top chest is the second of three commissioned possibly from Munn and made for David Hoyt as a wedding gift to his daughter, Mercy Hoyt, on the occasion of her marriage to Justin Hitchcock in 1779. The other two chests made for the Hoyt family are in the collections of Historic Deerfield and PVMA. The reverse ogee feet are directly related to the chest-on-chest 2009.36.1.
