Description:
Tall, thrown cylindrical vessel with wide shoulders, undercut neck and flaring rim, object is glazed on the interior of vessel and half way up the side of the vessel, the glazed portion appears bright orange in color, incised on side of pot is number "16", inscribed on base in pencil, Bot 1915/ Wilmington/ Mass/ Dealer?" and painted in red number "185" This object was originally part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. Gates catalogue card for this object reads: "185/ Jar (no cover) red clay, orange glaze, possibility twice fired: double glaze, mark (16) incised Probably anno (?) 7 1/4 " high: 4 1/2" top Col. 1915 Wilmington, Mass. of Draler?" According to redware scholar Justin Thomas this tall jar is similar to a jar that he purchased in Gloucester, MA. Wilmington is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, but is not very far from Essex County.
