Description:
Thrown redware pitcher, with molded lower edge, tapered base, swelled, rounded shoulders, sharply angled neck, flaring collar, pinched upper rim forms the spout; applied strap handle, decorated with an incised band at the upper edge of rim, and two incised bands on the shoulder, red-orange ground with spots of manganese black glaze, painted in red on the underside of pitcher, “31.” Formerly part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. Chips along top rim. The original Gates notecard for this object reads, "Pitcher/ Col. Fitchburg. 1908. Red clay: redish glaze. 2 in incised rings: 1 ring near/ rim. Black splash. 5 1/4 in."
