Description:
Very thick, heavy circular, domed mold made out of red earthenware clay with smooth outer surface from being burnished, walls of mold are about 1 1/2 inches thick, sides of mold are also burnished; interior of mold has been scooped out so that it appears like a dish; the interior has been scored with marks from a tool or knife, at the base of the interior is a circular depression where a portion has broken off or been lost - perhaps this is a result of breaking off of kiln furniture. This mold is not signed. Condition: Excellent There are some heavy scratches on the outer surface of the mold and a few minor chips on the rim. The Winterthur Museum has a large collection of signed plate molds - most from Pennsylvania potters dated from the early to the mid-nineteenth century.
