Description:
Salt-glazed stoneware mug, cylindrical shaped mug has flat circular bottom, straight sides, circular mouth, the edge of the rim has been incised with two horizontal bands, attached strap handle on side of mug with pointed terminal, the interior is coated with a dark brown slip, the exterior is a very white gray colored clay, the side of the mug has a large drip of gray glaze dripping down the side, inscribed on the bottom of the mug in red ink, “182.”? Formerly part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. The original notecard in the Gates papers for this object reads, " Various materials col. from the Old Norton Works (E. Bennington)/ By BNG June 1914, Mr. Charles Thatcher, present property owner, consisting of small/ moulds, Tools, &c. Crock markers or stamps, lead type for marking &c./ 182.-2 Salt glaze mug ....."
