Description:
Very thick, heavy circular, domed mold made out of light red earthenware clay with smooth outer surface from being burnished, walls of mold are about 1 inch thick, sides of mold are also burnished; interior of mold has possibly been lathe turned? - the inner surface is smooth with concentric rings and a prominent ring about 3/4 down the side of the interior made by a rib tool or lathe, this mold is not signed. Condition: Excellent, with some staining on the rim. There are some light scratches on the outer surface of the mold and a few minor chips on the rim. The hump mold may not have been heavily used. There is a light pencil inscription on the outer surface of the mold [illegible]. The Winterthur Museum has a large collection of signed plate molds - most from Pennsylvania potters dated from the early to the mid-nineteenth century.
