Description:
Thrown, red earthenware jug, with flat bottom, molded lower edge, bulbous swelled sides, straight sided collar or neck, rim has an incised line along its edge, the spout is formed from pinching the rim, applied and ribbed strap handle to side of jug, covered all over in an olive-green glaze. Inscribed in red paint on the bottom of the jug, “199” in a circle and underlined, pencil inscription is illegible, Formerly part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. Condition: glaze is very crazed on jug with some evidence of salts damage. Original Gates notecard for this object reads, "Pitcher. Red clay. Dark Green to yellow edge glaze. 8" x 4 1/2" base. / Col. by Osborn (Dec. 1914) Phil, Schuylkill Valley."
