Description:
Thrown red earthenware jar with a cylindrical shape, flat bottom, straight sides, angled shoulders, tall neck, and rounded, flaring rim, mouth is round, covered in a green – orange lead glaze, the glaze does not cover the bottom quarter of the piece but drips down in dramatic arcs, inscribed on bottom of jar in red paint, "40" and on side of jar in red paint, “40.” There is also an indecipherable ink inscription on the side of the jar. This jar was formerly a part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. Gates notecard for this object reads, "Jar./ Col. Washington, D.C. 1910. Red clay. 8 1/2 in high Glazed failed to run down / not for cover. 2 incised rings/ suggest W. Va."
