Description: Thrown, ovoid-shaped jug with spout at top slightly flared and rounded at the rim; applied strap handle with subtle ribs attachs from spout to middle of pot; slight suggestion of an incised line at collar of jug; base of jug has slightly flaring foot, and flat unglazed base, marked in red paint on underside, "81." Condition: Glazed allover with lead glaze, glaze has crackled over the body and in some areas has flaked away - such as around the collar of the jub, along the rim of the spout, there are some glaze flakes that are lifting but not yet detached, along the body of the jug, dirty surface needs to be cleaned, area along bottom edge is unglazed, area along the bottom edge is very chipped, spout has a piece broken out and reglued, some sticky adhesive or varnish on bottom of jug. Originally part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. A notecard in the Gates papers reads: "81/ Jug./ Col. Essex Co. Mass. Red clay. uniform glaze. Incised ring near top. 9 in. (in a new hand) Mouth restored by William Brandon. 1990. / Danvers?"
