Description:
Thrown, straight sided cylindrical mug, with flat bottom, rounded edge to bottom edge, applied strap handle, there are two horizontal incised ribs just below the top rim, covered in an brown slip, the base has some evidence of smear of brown slip from the potter’s fingers, inscribed on base in red paint, “182.1” and in brown/black ink, “182.1” Formerly part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. The original notecard in the Gates papers for this object reads, " Various materials col. from the Old Norton Works (E. Bennington)/ By BNG June 1914, Mr. Charles Thatcher, present property owner, consisting of small/ moulds, Tools, &c. Crock markers or stamps, lead type for marking &c./ 182.-1 Albany slip mug ....."
