Description:
Thrown, red earthenware vase-shaped pitcher with a narrow circular base, tapered base, bulbous sides, narrow neck, flaring rim with pinched rim to form spout, covered on the interior with a dark brown glaze; Inscribed in bottom of pitcher in black ink “Clinton/ 1911” and in pencil, “17.” and in red paint, “17.” Formerly part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. Original notecard in the Gates papers for this object reads, "Pitcher without handle./ Col. Clinton 1911. Red clay: black glaze only inside. 5 in high. 4 1/2 in. across top./ Lip./ Sterling?"
