Description:
Mugs were produced in great quantity by every pottery, yet today few survive, probably due to rough handling in taverns and public houses. Thrown, straight-sided mug with attached strap handle, rim of mug has two ribs around the outer edge, the number "5" in incised into the base of the mug and painted in red the number "127", coated with an orange lead glaze, there are some small splotches of brown. This mug was formerly a part of the Burton N. Gates collection. The Gates catalogue card for the object reads: "127/ Mug Red Clay. light glaze somewhat mottled, incised rings at margin Mark figure 5 incised in bottom 5 (in circle) 3 3/4 base 5 in high"
