Description:
Ovoid shaped, thrown jug with small, overturned spout, attached strap handle, body has tapering shoulders, wide body, and narrow circular base, the jug is covered with a bright orange lead glaze, it has many scratches and glaze losses along the widest part of the belly. There are two scribe marks about two inches below the spout. The base edge of the jug is very chipped and there is a large loss to the spout. Painted in red "38." on the underside of the base. Formerly part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. Original Gates note card for this object reads: "Jug./ Col. Marlboro. (?) Gates Tavern. Yellowish orange glaze: clear. Red Clay. 9.5 in. 2 incised rings."
