Description:
Thrown redware jar with flat circular base, straight sides, canted shoulders, and small circular mouth with short collar, there are two small lug or cap-like handles at either side of the jar (similar to those found on stoneware pieces), covered all over in a reddish brown glaze, painted in red on the base of the pot, “39.” Formerly part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. Original Gates notecard for this object reads, "Jar./ Col. Sprfld. Mass. 1910. Red clay. Not for cover. 2 finger holds on sides/ 9 in High."
