Description:
Brassiere worn by Dorothy Cleveland Phelps (1895-1994) of Greenfield, Massachusetts, upon her marriage to Clarence Dewitt Rugg (1892-1989) of Greenfield, on April 2, 1918, which was probably purchased in the Greenfield, Massachusetts, area. This undergarment is an important example of an early 20th-century brassiere, which at this time consisted of an unstructured band of material. Later brassieres become much more structural, shaped and shaping.
