This print image shows a view of the naval battle between Lieutenant Thomas MacDonough’s fleet and a superior British force that occurred on Lake Champlain on September 11, 1814. The American victory forced the British to retreat into Canada and denied them any claims for control of the Great Lakes during the negotiations that ended the War of 1812. According to one contemporary chronicler, “The battle was exceedingly obstinate; the enemy fought gallantly; but the superiority of our gunnery was irresistible.”
