Description: Silver teaspoon with a downturned fiddle-end handle, rounded shoulders and pointed oval bowl (slightly dented), which is marked "PHELPS" in a rectangle for Samuel F. Phelps (1815-1890), and engraved with the initials "IM" or J M." This is one of a collection of silver spoons from the Viola Wilby estate., and possibly belonged to the Merritt family of Conway, Massachusetts. Although an attached paper label says the spoon is by Ebenezer Strong Phelps (1788-1872) of Northampton, the mark is that of Samuel F. Phelps who worked in Troy, NY, from 1834-1838.
