Description: Since their inception in the late 17th century, fashion plates served an important role in communicating changes and novelties in clothing for both men and women. Often, a fashion plate from a French publication would be purchased (and possibly altered) for an American fashion magazine. Godey's Ladies' Magazine was a successful women's magazine published in Philadelphia from 1830 until 1898. This plate depicts five women (one of them a bride) and one child, in an interior setting, with three men in the background. The plate is partially hand colored. "GODEY'S FASHIONS./ Capewell & Kimmel Sc". Capewell and Kimmel were the printers of this plate, which is in a double page format.
