Description:
World War I artillery regiment flag of Henry Flynt (1893-1970), “308/A” with an emblem of cross canons. These flags were sometimes known as Guideons (guide-ons) for the visible role they played in aiding troop formations in marching and in battle.

Label Text:
Shortly after graduation from Williams College in 1916, Henry Needham Flynt (1893-1970) enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was initially stationed in Plattsburg, New York, as a member of the 78th Infantry Division. In 1917, America had entered the Great War (World War I), and Flynt soon joined the 308th Field Artillery Regiment. He was stationed in northern France until the war’s conclusion in 1918. For several months he remained in eastern France to help with that country’s transition to peacetime. Flynt returned to the States in 1920 to begin a career in law, and married his fiancée, Helen Geier (1895-1986).
