Description: Mourning picture done primarily in greens and browns with a tomb topped with an urn and a willow tree in the background and surrounded by other trees and bushes, which has the inscription "Amanda, daughter of Justus / and Jerusha Smith Died / Jan. 16. 1822. Aged / 11 months" in black ink, and across the bottom, "The Little blooming seraph lingered here. To twine around our hearts and disappear." Amanda Smith (1821-1822) was the daughter of Jerusha Montague Smith (1797-1835), daughter of Ebenezer Montague (1768-1809) and Jerusha Amsden (1773-1819), and Justus Smith (1790-1846) of Ashfield who married in 1820. It is possible that their daughter Amanda was named after her aunt, Amanda Amsden (1781-1860), who lived with them.
