Description:
Warp faced, woven worsted wool sash, woven on a tape loom, worked in vertical blue and white stripes with russet, and dark and light blue borders, which is stitched "NATHANAEL BARTLET OCTOBER 19 1771." The sash was probably woven using a rigid heddle tape loom. Nathaniel Bartlett (1734-1778) was from Plymouth, Massachusetts, and served in Albany, New York, for the Crown Point expedition in 1775. His sash, worn either across the body or around the waist, is a rare survival. Woven on a tape loom, it would have added a decorative touch to Bartlett’s appearance on the battlefield.
