Description:
Inscriptions: SHREWSBURY * JANUARY * 14 ADOMINI / LEVI * WHITNEY * HORN * 1750 / DIVEL / BRAZON SERPENT / LF. The double-line upper case block lettering with diagonal shading is nearly identical to that on the Crosby horn (#7), but is not so finely engraved. It appears to be by the same hand. A large snake runs the length of the horn and is labeled BRAZEN SERPENT. It is a biblical term from John 3:14-15. An octopus design within a dotted rectangle is captioned DIVEL. An incised border precedes the recessed portion. The plug has no border. The rounded pine plug has a small brass screw in the center for securing the carrying strap. Four Maltese crosses are stamped into the plug.
