Description:
"John Stiles," Lake George, New York. John Stiles is recorded as serving from Sept. 11 to December 8 in 1755 and from March 29 to Nov. 12 of 1758. The work on this horn resembles that of several known carvers, but cannot be attributed to any one of them. The calligraphy is good but not of the highest quality : some of the letters were left out and had to be added in superscript and words are staggered to permit pleasant floral and geometric designs to become part of the inscription. The view of an unidentified fort may be Fort Edward or Fort Ticonderoga. Several houses on the bank of what looks like a river running past the fort suggest Fort Edward. This horn was painted many years after it was made. A later owner then steamed it to remove the paint and rubbed shoe polish on it.
