Description:
Powder horn inscribed "John Carril...." attributed to Cleaveland-Carril carver (w. 1758-1761). A John Carrill is listed in the New York muster rolls as serving in Captain Wright's company during the campaign of 1760. This example was carved at Fort Edward. It has many motifs including the British coat-of-arms being attacked by a griffen and a horse with a deer above it. It is devoid of other decoration. A neatly scrolled, deeply incised border blackened with pigment is carved 4 1/4 inches from the tip. A scalloped raised ring, also blackened, is carved 1/4 inch from the frist border, and a plain ring is 1 1/4 inches from the tip, thereafter the horn is faceted hexagonally to the tip.
