Description:
Powder horn inscribed "Zebulon Waterman..." of Colchester, Connecticut, which is attributed to the Selkirk-Page carver (w. 1758). The carver of this example could be the same man who decorated the Selkrig, Page and Hamilton horns (#24, 25 & 26). The formations of soldiers are almost identical to the ones on the Selkrig and Page horns, and the calligraphy is in the same handwriting. Idnetical floral and geometric decoration, borders, and scalloped throat are also seen on the related horns and the coat-of-arms, lion and unicorn, and mounted horsemen are all comparable. An interesting abstract border precedes the scalloped edge at the beginning of the recessed portion of this horn. Al l the horns by this carver appear to have been obtained from the same breed of cattle since they are exceptionally large and are all the same honey color. It may be pertinant that Henry Champion, the captain of Waterman's company, was a cattle drover.
