Description:
Pewter communion flagon with cover, which is unmarked but attributed to pewterer Richard Yates of London, and was used at the Congregational Church in Whately, Massachusetts, probably in the early 19th century. This flagon came from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Deming of Connecticut. They also owned a similar pair of unmatched pewter flagons from the Whately Congregational Church, which were given to a deacon of the church, a Mr. Elika Belden, and sold to the Demings by the deacon's wife, reputedly out of an old Hadley chest. PVMA also has a similar pair of flagons marked "R. Yates London" used in the First Congregational Church in Hawley, Massachusetts, and donated to PVMA in 1939. HD's flagon is attributed to Yates is based on a comparison to a similar flagon marked with Richard Yates' mark. There is the collectors' mark "P106" on the base. A note in the file from the Demings reads: "#P106 / Communion flagon with double C handle, urn finial. Unmarked but w/o question Yates. English from Whately, (Mass) Congregational Church bought of Mrs. Belden, widow of Deacon Elika Belden." The tall, conical container has a lathe-turned, stepped domed lid with a finial shaped like a squat urn step molded base, flared base and many bands of incised lines; deep U-shaped spout and inside a deep hear-shaped cut-out for the spout; applied cast, double C-scrolled handle with a pierced thumbpiece on the top; and lathe-turned base with many incised lines.
