Description: One of two silver tablespoons (HD 2001.53.40-.41) with a downturned fiddle handle stamped with a fruit basket, rounded shoulders, and a pointed oval bowl with lobed shell on reverse, which is marked "G.S.GELSTON" on the back of the handle, and engraved with the initials "EDF" in script on the front of the handle. George Sears Gelston (1805-1890) worked in New York City as a retail jeweler and silversmith from about 1829-1838. George Gelston's brother, jeweler Henry Gelston (b.1803), and his partner, watchmaker William F. Ladd, apparently succeeded George at whose business addresses both were intermittently listed from 1834-1838.
