Description:
Chinese export porcelain soup plate decorated with a chinoiserie landscape scene in blue. The border exhibits an intricately patterned design of fish roe, cloud decoration, and flowers; the well has a small pagoda, running fence, tree branches, and a tall, scrolling flowering shrub, surrounded by a band of double-curls. Variations of this design have been found on both English and Irish delftware, including a dish (HD 1379) in the Historic Deerfield collection. George Sheldon donated a plate to PVMA described as: "India Plate, blue landscape on white.... Nearly all of the above belonged to Persis (Hoyt) Sheldon, born Feb. 28, 1747; married, June 12, 1769, John Sheldon; died Nov. 2, 1829. Grandmother of the donor."
