Description:
Fragment of crewel embroidery, consisting of blue (two deep shades) and white or off-white woolen yarns, which has a tag stitched on front: "Property of / Elizabeth Lathtrop Nowell." Embroidery done onto a bleached or half bleached, plain-weave linen ground. Stitches used include filling stitch and stem stitch. Fragment is hemmed at the top in an overcast stitch. Hem at proper left side has come undone. Rolled hem on proper right side appears to be a selvage, indicating the original work extended out either side of this piece, like in a border. On the central flower are crewel "dots." On other examples, the stitches would have used the technique of French knots. This stitcher did not use French knots and the subsequent result is less effective.
