Description:
Wall or display piece of crewel embroidery embroidered onto a linen ground, with printed cotton on the back. The scalloped edges are edged with a matching cotton (done with brown cotton? thread); the braid at the top makes a hanging loop. The embroidered, scrolling floral spray covers most of the surface, and includes two shades of red (pink), light tan, brown, and blue; the blue (indigo) background is done in a couching stitch. The printed cotton on the back has a printed red background with small 1/8" square, paired squares outlined in blue and left white in the centers. The piece is filled with off-white wool batting. The crewel embroidery (1730-1770) dates to before the printed cotton (c. 1840), with each fabric dating to the extreme of the dates given. The entry list for this item on the object list of French acquisitions reads "1840s backing, 18thc wool crewel".
