Description:
Chinese export porcelain straight-sided oval teapot decorated in underglaze blue enamel, which is in a shape sometimes called the Old Oval (a straight-sided, oval pot with or without fluting) that was popular in the late 18th century. Early in the 17th century, Chinese potters perfected the art of imitating western decoration and shapes such as this teapot that is based on English silver and ceramic teapots of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The teapot has a flat oval lid with nut-shaped finial; a diamond diaper pattern with spearhead and dumbell border around the top; attached cylindrical spout; and an entwined strap handles with floral terminals; and is decorated in the "Nanking pattern" with an aquatic landscape with pagodas, water, willow trees, and birds around the sides.
