Description: Silver tablespoon with an oval bowl (tip worn) and rounded drop; straight, rectangular shaft tapered to slightly downturned pointed-end handle; and bright-cut design around entire front of handle. The spoon is marked "W.V.B." in rectangle twice on the back of handle.for William Van Buren (Van Beuren), and engraved with the initials "M S M" in block letters in a bright-cut oval on the handle. According to Quimby, Van Buren appears in New York City directories for 1791-1792, but he advertised in "Wood's Gazette" (Newark, New Jersey) October 25, 1792: "at the sign of the Gold Watch" where he "plates all kinds of Harness and Bridle Furniture." By 1794, he was back in New York City at 22 Maiden Lane. Few examples of his work survive.
