Description: Silver tablespoon with an elliptical bowl and a double molded drop with a rib; thick rectangular shaft tapered to upturned rounded-end handle; and short midrib on front of handle tip. The spoon is marked "IR" in a rounded rectangle on back of handle possibly for Joseph Russell (1702-1780), and engraved with the initials "M W / R*M" in block letters on back of handle. On the original catalogue card, Mr Kossack writes: "same mark as #736, caster, attributed to Roseboom, and drop similar to #162 by James Roe and marked "I.ROE" Mr. Phillips indicated it might be made by James Roe." Mr. Phillips probably is John Marshall Phillips, Curator of the Yale University Art Gallery, and silver expert. This mark is unlkie any of the marks for James Roe illustrated by Belden.
