Description:
Woven silk coverlet probably done by Louise Adelaide S. (Plimpton) Cutler (1843-1921) at the Hill Insitute after 1905; and the silk thread used was probably produced at one of the local silk factories. The Cutlers lived on Park Street in Florence. Samuel Hill (1806-1882), a wealthy industrialist of Florence, Massachusetts, used his fortune to benefit the community's inhabitants. One of his achievements was the founding in 1876 of the first free kindergarten in the United States. He left property in his will for the establishment of a school to benefit local young men and women. In 1891, the Hill Industrial School in Florence (now Hill Institute) was founded to teach sewing, home economics, and industrial arts; weaving was added to the curriculum in 1905.
