Description:
Chippendale side chair in mahogany with maple seat rails and a trapezoidal slip-seat frame covered with beige material. The chair has a molded crest rail with carved ears; Gothic-patterned pierced splat; beading down the corners of the two front, square legs; plain rectangular, compressed stretchers; and chamfered rear legs. The square Chippendale leg, which gradually superseded the cabriole leg in New England, was in wide use from 1770 on; it was easier and cheaper to manufacture as were the rectangular stretchers, which were generally used with the square leg. This splat is also found on highly-carved chairs with cabriole legs.
