Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Ernest Lawson studied at the Art Students League in New York with John Twachtman and J. Alden Weir, two prominent American Impressionist painters. Lawson's early paintings demonstrate his keen understanding of this style, but a stylistic transformation took place after he saw the Armory Show in 1913. His vivid palette (compared to "crushed jewels") and sense of abstraction were kindled, as is evident with the painting Autumn Hills. Its vibrant hues and thick application of paint are typical of Lawson's work of this period. A member of The Eight, he is known for sparsely populated landscapes of New England, and scenes near the Harlem River in upper Manhattan's Washington Heights, where he lived on 155th Street.
