Description:
Above, inmates receive absolution from a priest on Christmas Day. They are in deep reverence. Below, they joyfully celebrate with vodka. While there is almost no friendliness among convicts, the holiday spirit briefly changes that. Thus, a cellmate comes running up to Goryanchikov with a blissful smile. When asked what he came for, he does not know what to say. “But … it’s Christmas …,” he murmurs and hurries into the kitchen. These words are inscribed in the black hole dividing the composition.
