Alison Saar combines urban and contemporary themes with folklore and myth in her work. Sweeping Beauty is derived from a recent sculpture of the same title: “It is a play on the traditional African fly mask [whisk], which symbolizes royalty, and the thankless duties of the matriarch,” Saar says. The image of a fertility goddess is depicted upside down in an earthlike cavity, caressing her belly. The allusion to domestic servitude is represented by the figure’s hair sweeping the floor as if it were a broom. - Label text - Copyright 1999 Walker Art Center
